Biography:
Pieter Glavimans was born in 1755 in Rotterdam. As a talented naval architect he started working at the Rotterdamse Admiraliteit or the Admiraliteit op de Maze as a overseer. Glavimans climbed up through the ranks quickly: only five years later he became head of the shipbuilding department (opperscheepsbouwer). In 1795, Glavimans became constructor-general of the navy, after being a member of a commission that analyzed the quality of the Dutch naval fleet. Glavimans had a central position in navy: it was his task to unify the five different admiralty's. Glavimans played an important role in naval architecture and building in the navy during the Batavian-French period in Dutch history. He did so until 1815, when he was fired after a disaster with a squadron on its way to the Mediterranean Sea in December 1814. Several ships were heavily damaged during a storm in the Channel and had to be left behind in Engeland. They were replaced by ships bought from the British. This disaster under rear-admiral Jan Tulleken ended the career of Glavimans in the navy.

Co-designed and constructed schip-sluisdeur in Medemblik, 1805.

Biography:
In 1671 Cézar Caze had done experiments in Amsterdam with a machine reducing the speed of a ship. A few year later he was involved in the designs of clocks and in 1688 Caze published a tract on balances (De l'usage des stateres, ou romaines balances, Amsterdam 1688). Around that time Caze served five years in a Leeuwarden prison, as a result of bad financial affairs with France. In 1696 Caze invented a calculating machine on which topic he corresponded in the years 1704-1708 with Gotfried Wilhelm von Leibnitz. He obtained a patent for this machine (and on a dissertation on 'the use and improvement of arithmetic') in 1711. Cf. Biography:
Jan Blanken Jz. was born in 1755 as the son of a carpenter. He eventually became a hydraulic engineer and was one of the central figures in water management in the late 18th century and the early 19th century. His son would eventually follow in his footsteps.

Designed double graving dock at Hellevoetsluis. This graving dock was the first one emptied with a steam engine. That engine, designed by James Watt, was smuggled from Great-Britain in 1801. Additionally, under his guidance another graving dock was constructed at Willemsoord, and together with nearby buildings this eventually became a navy base. Blanken Jz. also came up with the initiative to construct a canal between Amsterdam and Den Helder as he believed it would be of a high economic and military interest to construct such a canal. Both merchandise and the military could be transported faster between the two harbors. Moreover, it would be easier for freighters to reach open sea, which would be beneficial for Amsterdam trade. Blanken convinced King William I of his ideas and in 1819 the King ordered for the canal to be constructed. It was put into use at the end of 1824. At a length of eighty kilometers it was, at that moment, the longest canal worldwide.
