Instrument maker from Arnhem, the Netherlands. Between 1847 and 1852 he worked for Christopher Becker, between 1853 and 1858 he worked for several German companies. After 1858 he worked for Siemens and Haske in Berlin, from 1860 on he worked for the London branch of the company. Around 1865 he returned to The Netherlands and started his own instrument making company in the Ridderstraat, Arnhem. Here, he made mathematical, physical and optical instruments, and surveying devices. He also made balance scales for Dutch postal services. Lenses used in optical instruments were bought in Paris or Germany. After his death, his son Barend succeeded him.

Collection: Museum Boerhaave Leiden (a focus ruler and a compass).

Scientific instrument maker from Dantzig, Poland. Fahrenheit spent a large part of his life in the Dutch Republic. He made mainly thermometers, before 1716 he also made telescopes. Between 1702 and 1706 Fahrenheit was an apprentice in Amsterdam. In 1708, he went to Denmark and learned from Ole Romer in Copenhagen how to make thermometers. In 1717 he returned to Amsterdam, where he settled in the Leidsestraat, at the copper smith Roemer. Between 1717 and 1730 he taught physics and chemistry for a Group of Mennonite enthusiasts. He made thermometers, barometers, aerometers, perpetuum mobiles, eye models, pycnometers, solar microscopes, reflecting telescopes and mercury clocks. Fahrenheit is best known for for developing a temperature scale, named after him. In 1724 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London.

Jan Hope was the son of Thomas Hope and Margaretha Marcelis, first cousin of Henry Hope, father of Thomas Hope, and a follower of the Scottish Enlightenment. Berzelius (20 August 1779 - 7 August 1848) was a Swedish chemist. He worked out the modern technique of chemical formula notation and is, along with John Dalton, Antoine Lavoisier, and Robert Boyle, considered one of the founders of modern chemistry. He began his career as a physician but his researches in physical chemistry were of lasting significance in the development of the subject. He achieved much in later life as secretary of the Swedish Academy. He is known in Sweden as the Father of Swedish Chemistry.
