In 1671 Cézar Caze had done experiments in Amsterdam with a machine reducing the speed of a ship. A few year later he was involved in the designs of clocks and in 1688 Caze published a tract on balances (De l'usage des stateres, ou romaines balances, Amsterdam 1688). Around that time Caze served five years in a Leeuwarden prison, as a result of bad financial affairs with France. In 1696 Caze invented a calculating machine on which topic he corresponded in the years 1704-1708 with Gotfried Wilhelm von Leibnitz. He obtained a patent for this machine (and on a dissertation on 'the use and improvement of arithmetic') in 1711. Cf. Brass caster and optical engineer from Amsterdam. Around 1745 he assisted the Amsterdam merchant Jacobus van de Wall in the construction of a very large reflecting telescope. Years later, in 1762, Bley invented a Dutch version of the achromatic telescope, which design was published in the Verhandelingen van de Hollansche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen. A prototype was made by the Amsterdam instrument maker Jan van Deijl, who continued to produce such telescopes for many years.

Born in 1629, Huygens was the son of the poet and diplomat, Constantijn Huygens. He studied law in Leiden and Breda. He was interested mainly in mathematics and proved to be very talented early in life. With his brother Constantijn Jr., he ground lenses and made astronomical observations. He also developed a very accurate pendulum clock and established a wave-theory of light. His discoveries attracted attention abroad, and, in 1666, he was asked to lead the newly founded Académie des Sciences in Paris. After a few years absence caused by illness, he resigned from the Académie. Later in life he wrote a book on cosmolog, called 'Cosmotheoros'.
Inventor of the pendulum clock ("slingeruurwerk") and the aerial telescope. Designer of the Huygens ocular. Huygens discovered the moon of Saturn (Titan) and explained that a ring was present around this planet. He also established the wave-theory of light.

Microscope, telescope and spectacle maker in Amsterdam. In 1727 Sommer advertised for the first time for his optical products, stating he could be contacted in Amsterdam, both at the coffee shop of J. van der Wal at the 'Paradijsvogel' on the Rokin, or in The Hague. The instruments made by him - and his wife - were present in many instrument cabinets of the Amsterdam upper class. For instance in the instrument cabinet of the merchant Anthony Bierens (auctioned in 1747) some 30 optical objects were present, including 'an object and an eye glass fitted in a wooden holder, for an astronomical telescope of B. Sommer'. Other optical equipment made by Sommers is mentioned in the collections of Lambert ten Kate (Amsterdam 1737), Jeremias Face (Middelburg 1749), George Clifford (Amsterdam 1761) and Adriaan Assenborch (Utrecht ca. 1794). In the advertisements for the sale of the instrument cabinets of the Amsterdam (Mennonite) merchants Abraham Straalman (Leydse Courant, 19 November 1759) and Daniel de Vos (Leydse Courant, 20 November 1767), microscopes and glasses are mentioned 'most of the famous Sommers'. After Sommer's death (in 1733), his widow continued the workshop. Later she emigrated to New York.

Silo was a gifted and skilled general technician, who became involved in making telescopes. In 1695 he worked in Amsterdam as a producer of gold threads ('gouddraattrecker'). According to the eulogy of an anonymous friend (the painter Cornelis Ploos van Amstel?), Silo specialized in the production of metal tubes. As a producer of metal tubes he was introduced into telescope making. In the 1690s Silo invented a way of pulling lead and tin tubes, which mostly were used for distillation equipment and fountains, including those in the French waterworks of Marly and Fontainebleau. Silo is also credited for the invention of cutting rods for velvet weavers. ('snijroeden voor de fluweelwevers). In these years Silo started to make drawings of ships at the Amsterdam dockyards. This activity combined with his mathematical and technical skills, led him to propose some improvements in shipbuilding. He also learnt to paint, and evolved into a marine painter, signing his paintings with the letters 'A.S.'. In 1698 he instructed the Russian Czar Peter the Great in these matters. Through his painting, Silo also became interested in optics, and so he started to grind lenses. According to the Amsterdam historian Johannes Wagenaar, Silo made good telescopes, magnifying glasses and also wax models. One of his (now lost) wax models was a portrait of the merchant Jacobus van de Wall, a friend who much later - in the 1740s - became responsible for the design and construction of the largest reflecting telescope ever made in the eighteenth-century Netherlands. An objective glass made by Adam Silo was in the collection of the Dutch philosopher and optician Frans Hemsterhuis, a man who in the eighteenth century still continued the quest for optical knowledge which was pursued by his Dutch forefathers already more than a century earlier.

Natural philosopher in the seventeenth century Dutch Republic. From the early 1660s onwards he worked as an optical instrument maker. in September 1661 Spinoza was for the first time mentioned as a lens grinder in the diary of Olaus Borrichius. T. Kerckring had a microscope made by Spinoza. A German inventory of the scientific instruments in the estate of the late Duke Ernst of Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1601-1675), described a telescope of Spinoza as 'a Dutch tube, made by Spinoza, with seven green draw tubes, containing five glasses, and covered with black embossed leather, in a black casing'. However Spinoza's own estate mentions among his tools only 'some glass and plated iron pipes for the construction of his telescopes'. As the German description fits the contemporary appearance of local German telescopes, it seems probable that the German Duke had put Spinoza's lenses in a tube made by a local German craftsman.

Gerrit Stevens Cramer (d. Groningen, 1755) was a Groningen optical instrument maker. In 1729 he started a workshop in the Steentilstraat. In 1731, together with his relative J. Doornbusch, he made a large sundial that - to this day - can be seen above the entrance gate of the Prinsenhof in Groningen. Together with the Frisian reflecting telescope makers Wytze Foppes and Jan van der Bildt, he was an engineer ('vernuftelingen'), who in the early 1740s received support from Stadholder William IV. After Cramer's death, his optical workshop was continued by his nephew Jan Derks Cremer (c. 1706-1780).
For his obituary, see the Opregte Groninger Courant, 15 August 1755. In December 1781, Cramer's glass grinding equipment, which had been used until then by Cramer's nephew Jan Derks Cremer, was put up for sale. In 1791, this set was bought by the Groningen apothecary Boudewijn Tieboel for the optician Willem Trapman.

Biography:
Silversmith, lens grinder and instrument maker in Dordrecht (Heenestraat). Marcel was also a teacher in mathematics and physics. He experimented with magnets and he founded in the early eighteenth century a local physical society, gathering in a formal way several scientific enthusiasts in his home town Dordrecht. He was a cousin of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek.
