Biography:
Petrus Johannes van Baarda was an orphan, who in 1758 became a 'kwekeling' at the Fundatie van Renswoude in The Hague. There he was trained as a scientific instrument maker, being apprenticed in 1761 at the cabinet worker Van Hoogendoorn, in 1765 at Nicolas de Beefe, in 1767 at Nicolaas Dawans. In 1769, for a short period, Van Baarda was apprenticed in Paris, where he learned how to polish mirrors.
A microscope, made by him in Paris was offered to the Fundatie in 1771. Upon his return from Paris in 1772, he settled in The Hague as a scientific instrument and clockmaker. A year later, on 9 May 1773, he married Cornelia Catarina van Meegen. From 1782 until 1787 Van Baarda worked as 'Fourneur et Mechanicien' for the cabinet of experimental philosophy of the Stadtholder, William V. He probably lost his job as a result of patriotic sympathies, during the failed revolt of 1787. He was replaced, first temporarily by Mechior Swartsman, and later by Jona Francis Robert.
Baarda's business was probably not flourishing, for at the time of his second marriage, (on 18 May 1788 with Gerritje Hiddinga), he had four children in poor relief. He died in 1822.
