Biography:
Gerard Hulst van Keulen was a publisher, chart maker and navigational instrument maker in the Nieuwebrugsteeg in Amsterdam. Son of Joannes van Keulen (2). He added his grandmothers name 'Hulst' to his family name. After the death of his father, in 1755, he, his brother Cornelis Buijs van Keulen, and their mother lead the publishing and instrument making firm 'In de Gekroonde Lootsman'. After Cornelis' death in 1779 the firm was split up, whereby his widow Buijs van Keulen continued the anchor foundry. The instrument making and publishing business remained in the hands of Gerard Hulst van Keulen until his death in 1801. In 1792 he received a patent from the States of Holland for a circular dividing engine. From 1787 until his death in 1801 he was a member of the commission for implementing modern methods of finding longitude at sea, and improving sea charts (the 'Commissie tot de zaaken het bepaalen der lengte op zee en de verbeetering der zeekaarten betreffende'). Hulst van Keulen made navigating instruments, including cross staffs, octants, sextants, reflecting circles, compasses, astronomical and and mathematical instruments. After his death, his widow Anna Hendrina Calkoen, continued the business under the name 'Wed. Gerard Hulst van Keulen'.

Biography:
The Weduwe G. Hulst van Keulen was a retailing firm of navigating instruments and manuals, charts, and sea-atlases, from 1801-1885. After Gerard Hulst van Keulen died in 1801, his widow Anna Hendrika Calkoen, continued selling mainly imported navigating instruments, charts and books. The firm then no longer made instruments, except perhaps for compasses. After Anna's death in 1810, her grandson Johannes Gerard Hulst van Keulen van de Velde took over the firm, but he sold it in 1823. Thereafter it was continued by several owners under the name of 'Weduwe G. Hulst van Keulen', until it was liquidated in 1885. That year the inventory was auctioned by G.D. Bom HGz. In 1834 and 1835 various instruments were sold to 'Felix Meritis'.

Jacobus Kley was a scientific instrument maker in Rotterdam, where he probably was an apprentice to clock and scientific instrument maker Steven Hoogendijk. Kley made a wide variety of instruments, including astrolabes, octants and Davis quadrants. He made instruments for Fundatie van Renswoude in The Hague (ca.1760) and delivered instruments to Petrus van Musschenbroek (a 'spiegel octant', in 1754), and Hahn. Kley provided Pieter Holm in Amsterdam with the octants that Holm retailed under his own name from 1752-1767.
