Biography:
Completed his study of law and philosopy in 1748. He became a lawyer at 'Hof van Gelderland' in Arnhem. In 1758 he was appointed as professor of law in Groningen. There his liberal views on religion and his preference for natural law (at the expense of roman law) were the causes for a controversial dispute. When Van der Marck published 'Lectiones Academicae, quibus selecta philosophiae practicae jurisque naturae capita et praecipue officia erga Deum pertractantur (Groningen 1771) and 'Lectionum Academicarum tomus secundus, quo praecipua juris ecclesiastici protestantium universalis capita pertractantur'(Groningen 1772) the matter became even more serious. On February the 2th 1773, he was dismissed from his office. He settled in Lingen where he assumed the position of professor of law. From there he maintained contacts with several Patriots, including Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol.
