Biography:
Writer of the Jaromir-cycle. Antonie Christiaan Winand Staring was born in 1767. At a young age, his parents left for Cape of Good Hope because of his father's job. Young Staring went to live with his family. When his father passed away, his uncle, a minister, became his legal supervisor. In 1783, Staring started studying law in Harderwijk. Soon, he found out that law was not for him. He was more interested in agricultural economics and decided that, although he would finish his education in Harderwijk, would move to Germany to study what he liked best. Staring was also highly interested in poetry and literature. In this, he was inspired by poet Rhijnvis Feith, who also encouraged Staring to publish his own poetry. In 1786 he published Mijne eerste proeven in poezij. His poems and writings usually centered around agriculture and rural life. Upon his return from Gottingen he accepted, although hesitantly, several political offices. Staring was a convinced federalist and detested the centralistic structure of the Batavian Republic. Although his political ideas were clear he preferred to not engage in politics all too much. Instead, he preferred spending time on managing and improving his estate Wildenborch in Vorden (Gelderland). In contrast to being politically active he did enjoy his membership of the Commission for Agriculture in Gelderland. Yet, out of a sense of duty he became mayor of the town of Lochem. Staring was a strong advocate of Gelderland and contributed to a statistical work on the province and also tried to establish a veterinary school in Zutphen, but eventually failed. In 1814 he also was a member of an assembly of notables deciding over the first constitution.

Biography:
Pieter Glavimans was born in 1755 in Rotterdam. As a talented naval architect he started working at the Rotterdamse Admiraliteit or the Admiraliteit op de Maze as a overseer. Glavimans climbed up through the ranks quickly: only five years later he became head of the shipbuilding department (opperscheepsbouwer). In 1795, Glavimans became constructor-general of the navy, after being a member of a commission that analyzed the quality of the Dutch naval fleet. Glavimans had a central position in navy: it was his task to unify the five different admiralty's. Glavimans played an important role in naval architecture and building in the navy during the Batavian-French period in Dutch history. He did so until 1815, when he was fired after a disaster with a squadron on its way to the Mediterranean Sea in December 1814. Several ships were heavily damaged during a storm in the Channel and had to be left behind in Engeland. They were replaced by ships bought from the British. This disaster under rear-admiral Jan Tulleken ended the career of Glavimans in the navy.
