Biography:
John Fromanteel (1638-c. 1690) was the son of the famous London clockmaker Ahasuerus Fromantee sr. After an apprenticeship with his father in 1651, Fromanteel worked for Salomon Coster. In 1659, later Fromanteel went back to London where he and his father made the first pendulum clocks in England. Fromanteel became a freeman in 1663 and after that took four apprentices, one of them being his son Ahasuerus (the third) in 1679. In 1681 John returned to the Netherlands and settled with his brother Ahasuerus jr. as a clockmaker on the Vijgendam in Amsterdam. John seemed to have travelled back frequently to London.

Biography:
Gerrit Stevens Cramer (d. Groningen, 1755) was a Groningen optical instrument maker. In 1729 he started a workshop in the Steentilstraat. In 1731, together with his relative J. Doornbusch, he made a large sundial that - to this day - can be seen above the entrance gate of the Prinsenhof in Groningen. Together with the Frisian reflecting telescope makers Wytze Foppes and Jan van der Bildt, he was an engineer ('vernuftelingen'), who in the early 1740s received support from Stadholder William IV. After Cramer's death, his optical workshop was continued by his nephew Jan Derks Cremer (c. 1706-1780).

For his obituary, see the Opregte Groninger Courant, 15 August 1755. In December 1781, Cramer's glass grinding equipment, which had been used until then by Cramer's nephew Jan Derks Cremer, was put up for sale. In 1791, this set was bought by the Groningen apothecary Boudewijn Tieboel for the optician Willem Trapman.

Collections: Louwman Collection of Historic Telescopes (refracting telescope with copper tubes), Museum Boerhaave Leiden (a reflecting telescope made by Cramer in cooperation with Jan van der Bildt, several microscopes).

Biography:
Syds Johannes Rienks (1770-1845) was a microscope and telescope maker from Ferwerderadeel. He developed his skills until he could make a living as a professional instrument maker. Trained by Arjen Roelofs in 1798, he went to Delft in 1805, where he worked for a short time in the scientific instrument factory of Onderdewijngaart Canzius. After the closure of this facory in 1810 he returned to Friesland. In 1819-1825 (by the order of King Willem I) Rienks and his companion Roelofs were commisioned to make two large telescopes for the astronomical observatories in Utrecht and Leiden. However these telescopes appeared to be useless for astronomy. Nevertheless Rienks again moved to Holland in 1826, this time to Leiden, where he stayed until his death in 1845.

In the same year, his two sons became partners in his firm, a partnership that lasts until 1877. In the ten years father and sons worked closely together, the firm moved a couple of times. In 1877, when his sons had left the firm, he established his workshop on the Warmoesstraat 119. Eight years later, in 1885, he moved to the Wijde Lombardsteeg 5 and in 1902 to the Albert Cuypstraat 100. That was also the last year Van Deene worked as an instrument maker. He won several prizes for his thermometers at national exhibitions. He held a Royal warrant of appointment for his thermometers and hydrometers.

Biography:
Instrument maker | inventor | painter who lived in Haarlem, Amsterdam, Prague and London. He made a water pump (for which he received a patent for 25 years in 1598), optical intruments and a clock with a perpetual motion. He was also an engraver and grinded lenses. In 1604, he and his wife Sophia, sister of his former tutor Hendrik Goltzius, moved to England where Drebbel started working for King James I of England. In 1610 Drebbel and family were invited to come to the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. After Rudolf's death in 1612, Drebbel went back to London. In 1619 Drebbel designed and built telescopes and microscopes and was involved in a building project for the Duke of Buckingham. Drebbel became famous for his invention in 1621 of a microscope with two convex lenses. Several authors, including Christiaan Huygens, assigned the invention of the compound microscope to Drebbel. In 1624 Galileo sent a Drebbel-type microscope to Federico Cesi, a wealthy noble citizen of Rome, who used it to illustrate Apiarum, his book about bees. He also built the first navigable submarine in 1620 while working for the English Royal Navy. Using William Bourne's design from 1578, he manufactured a steerable submarine with a leather-covered wooden frame. Between 1620 and 1624 Drebbel successfully built and tested two more submarines, each one bigger than the last. The final (third) model had 6 oars and could carry 16 passengers. This model was demonstrated to King James I in person and several thousand Londoners. The submarine stayed submerged for three hours and could travel from Westminster to Greenwich and back, cruising at a depth of from 12 to 15 feet (4 to 5 metres). Drebbel even took James in this submarine on a test dive beneath the Thames, making James I the first monarch to travel underwater. This submarine was tested many times in the Thames, but it couldn't attract enough enthusiasm from the Admiralty and was never used in combat. Drebbel's most famous written work was Een kort Tractaet van de Natuere der Elementen (A short treatise of the nature of the elements) (Haarlem, 1621). He was also involved in the invention of mercury fulminate. He had found out that mixtures of 'spiritus vini' with mercury and silver in 'aqua fortis' could explode. The story goes that, while making a coloured liquid for a thermometer Cornelis dropped a flask of Aqua regia on a tin window sill, and discovered that stannous chloride makes the color of carmine much brighter and more durable. Though the inventor himself never made much money from his work, his daughters Anna and Catharina and his sons-in-law Abraham and Johannes Sibertus Kuffler set up a very successful dye works. One was set up in 1643 in Bow, London, and the resulting color was called bow dye. The recipe for 'color Kufflerianus' was kept a family secret and the new bright red color was all the rage in Europe
