Gerard van Keulen was a chart maker, publisher and cross-staff maker in the Nieuwebrugsteeg in Amsterdam, from 1704-1726. He became a poorter (citizen) and was admitted to the book sellers guild in 1704, and that year took over the family firm 'In de Gekroonde Lootsman' from his father Johannes van Keulen (1). After Gerard's death, in 1726, his son Johannes van Keulen (2) succeeded him in the firm. A cross-staff by him dated 1724 is preserved.

Johannes Loots was a cross-staff maker in Amsterdam, from 1691-1726, on the Zeedijk, and in the Nieuwe Brugsteeg, 'In de Jonge Lootsman'. He was an apprentice to cross-staff maker Hendrick Doncker. In 1691 Loots was recorded as mathematical instrument maker. In 1693 he was admitted to the booksellers guild and in 1695 he started selling charts, Johannes' oldest preserved cross-staff also dates from that year. After Loots' death, his widow Sara Swigters, and her brother Isaac Swigters, continued the firm until 1743 and 1750 respectively. She advertised as 'Weduwe van wijlen Johannes Loots konst- en kaartverkoopster'. After 1750 Hendrik Mooy purchased the remaining cross-staffs and continued that branch of the firm 'In de Jonge Lootsman'.

Instrument maker who was taught by famous instrument makers in Germany, Switserland, France and Italy. In 1862 he joined the instrument company of his father, now called J. Linden & Zoon. In 1865 he became instrument maker for the Rotterdam 'Society for Medical and Obstetrician Instruments' ('Vereeniging der Heel- en Verloskundige Instrumentenverzameling'). In 1908 the company became the regular supplier of medical instruments for Leiden University. In 1934 the company Linden was the first Dutch company producing nitrous oxide devices (in cooperation with professor Zaaijer and Dr. Meijs).
