Biography:
Moved to Leiden in 1718 and started working for Leiden University in 1719. Like his father Bernard, Jacob van der Cloesen was engaged to maintain and repair the planetarium ("Leidse Sphaera") in the university's library. In 1767, his son Bernardus was appointed as his successor. From 1718 on, Cloesen was a "poorter" (a Dutch or Flemish burgher who had acquired the right to live within the city gates of a city) of Leiden and became the city's watchmaker in 1721. In addition to watches, Van der Cloesen made other timepieces such as pyrometers and heliostates.

Biography:
Meylan was a Swiss-born clock and scientific instrument maker, who came to the Netherlands around 1770. He married in Leiden in 1779 to Marie Roze Bourgois from Mouveau (Flanders). Between 1779 and 1790 they obtained six children. Only in 1789 a colleague instrument maker (Jona François Robert) stood witness at the baptism of one of their children. Meylan's workshop was at first 'Langebrugge omtrent de Wolsteeg' (= 'Wijk 1, nr 387). In 1803 he remarried to Maria van Nijmegen, widow Van Rosse, from the 'Koepoortsgragt', who in the years 1828-1830 advertised in the Leydse Courant with 'un assortement de modes françoises'. After Meylan's death in 1832, his son Charles Meylan jr. continued the instrument makers workshop at the Koepoortsgragt until his own death in 1844.
In 1793 Charles Meylan Sr. delivered some scientific instruments to Leiden University. In the 1790s several newspaper advertisements praised his microscopes. From 1794 until ca. 1809 Meylan kept the clock in both the Leiden Academy as well as the Leiden Sphaera in good order.

Biography:
Abraham de Casseres was born in Amsterdam. He was the son of a Portuguese clockmaker and received his training from Andreas Hohwü sr. and later from Asmus Johannsen in London. Around 1855, De Casseres started a clockmaker's workshop at the Rapenburg no.33 in Amsterdam with his partner Kiek. Business went well and soon he had so many customers (Royal Netherlands Navy, observatories and the merchant navy) that he had to hire seven craftsmen to get all the work done. After 1905, De Casseres bought his chronometers in London from Johannsen on which he placed his own dial. The firm of De Casseres was continued by his son J. de Casseres first also in Amsterdam and it existed in Rotterdam until 1939.
