Jan (Backer) van Call was a German-born instrument maker who lived in Battenberg for a while, and thus was also known as 'Jan van Batenburg'. He was acquainted with Christiaan Huygens, who called him a "vermaert meester". In 1658, he and Salomon Coster were granted a patent for the construction of the pendulum clock. In 1644 he became "carillonist" (a person who plays carillons), timepiece maker and land surveyor for the city of Nijmegen. Van Call designed and made timepieces, pumps, sundials and surveying equipment. He also provided a new clock for the St Jacobs church in Utrecht (1648-1651) and repaired the clock and carillon on the city hall in Delft in 1663.

Biography:
Watch maker from Rotterdam. His parents and his grandfather were watch makers. He was an apprentice of Cornelis Uyterweer, Hendrik Overbury and Hendrik Overschie. He was one of the driving forces behind the fouding of the Bataafsch Genootschap van Proefondervindelijke Wijsbegeerte. The main goal of the society was to introduce the steam engine in the Netherlands. Hoogendijk first tried to convince the Dutch authorities to buy a steam engine, but did not succeed and eventually it was Hoogendijk himself that paid for it. Hoogendijk was also a supervisor of the city's timepieces and "stadsbouwermeester" (supervisor of the city's buildings) in Rotterdam. He lived on Blaak and Kleine Draaisteeg. He was inventor of pyrometers, pedometers, a watermill. Before he died, Hoogendijk donated an expensive collection of scientific instruments to the Bataafsch Genootschap.
