Biography:
Johannes van Keulen was a scientific and navigational instrument maker, book seller and chart maker in Amsterdam, he was admitted to the booksellers guild in 1725. Johannes was the son of Gerard van Keulen, and the father of Gerard Hulst van Keulen. Johannes joined his father's firm 'In de Gekroonde Lootsman' in the Nieuwe Brugsteeg, in 1724. A year later, after his father's death Van Keulen took over the firm. From 1743 onwards he was the official chart maker of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the following year he started making octants, and called himself mathematical instrument maker. Until his death in 1755 Johannes continued as cartographer, publisher, compass, backstaff and cross-staff maker. After his death in 1755, his wife (Catharina Buijs) took over the firm, together with their two sons, Gerard Hulst van Keulen and Cornelis Buijs van Keulen. Between 1755-1779 the firm was called Johannes van Keulen & Zoonen.

Biography:
Son of instrument maker and chemist Petrus Jacobus KIpp. Took over his father's company together with his brother Wilhelmus Arnoldus. In 1866, the two rename the company into P.J. Kipp en Zonen (P.J. Kipp and Sons). Wilhelmus takes care of the pharmacy and chemical division, while Antonius Johannes managed the trade in chemicals and scientific instruments. Throughout the years, the firm works together with several engineers, chemists and professors, among others Dr. W.J.H. Moll, F. Zernike, P. van Cittert, H.W.L. Brueckman and Dr. Van Heel. The company was successful, largely because of the presence of the Polytechnische School in Delft (Delft University) and the international contacts both the two brothers and their father had. In 1887 J.W. Giltay, who had worked for the two brothers since 1881, took over the company and names it P.J. Kipp & Zonen J.W. Giltay opvolger. Giltay expands the company further and focuses mainly on the telephone and electronics. After Giltay, in 1912 O.A. Ankersmidt took over the company.
