BIO
Dissertation: N/AHighest degree: N/A
Fields of interest:
Biography:
Duke of Aerschot and Prince of Chimay. One of the highest and most wealthy noblemen of the Southern Netherlands. Married Marie de Brimeu in September 1580, he was ten years her junior. Marie de Brimeu converted him to Protestantism and they moved to the Southern Netherlands. Because of political conflicts with William, Prince of Orange, De Croy returned to Catholicism and to the Habsburg regime after some years, while Marie de Brimeu remained a Calvinist and stayed in the Netherlands. His sister was Anne de Croy, Duchess of Aerschot, she was married to Charles d'Arenberg.
De Croy was a collector of various things: art, antiquities and naturalia. Jacques Plateau sold some of his ornithological curiosities to the Duke, and became a member of his staff from 1604 onwards.
Shared botanical interest with Carolus Clusius, they corresponded. Clusius visited him in The Hague in the spring of 1598 to see his tulips. De Croy and Clusius exchanged pictures as well. The engraving of an Indian Daffodil (Rariorum Plantarum, 1601) is based on an illustration Clusius received from De Croy, for example.

Between 1768 and 1774, Pallas led an expedition to central Russian provinces, Povolzhye, Urals, West Siberia, Altay and Transbaikal collecting natural history specimens on behalf of Catharina the Great. After the expedition, he settled in St. Petersburg, becoming Catherine's favorite and teaching natural history to the Grand Dukes Alexander and Constantine. In the meantime, he published several academic works on natural history. Between 1793 and 1794, Pallas led a second expedition to southern Russia, visiting the Crimea and the Black Sea. Upon his return, Catherine II gave him a large estate at Simferopol, where Pallas lived until the death of his second wife in 1810. He was then granted permission to leave Russia by Emperor Alexander, and returned to Berlin, where he died in the following year.

In 1766, Banks made a botanical expedition to Labrador and Newfoundland to collect plants and other specimens with his friend Lieutenant Constantine Phipps. He took part in Captain James Cook's first expedition (1768-1771) on the Endeavour which explored the unchartered lands of the South Pacific and recorded observations on the Transit of Venus. The expedition circumnavigated the globe, enabling Banks to visit South America, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Java, and New Zealand (1769-1770), where he collected specimens. Later Banks and Solander visited the Hebrides and Iceland together (1772). His collections and library were donated to the then British Museum after his death.
Banks was elected president of the Royal Society of London in 1778, a position he held for 41 years until his death in 1820.
