Biography:
Jan Steenwinkel was born in 1754 in a wealthy family living in Rotterdam. At a young age his parents enrolled him at the Erasmiaansche School, nowadays called the Erasmiaans Gymnasium. Here he started studying Latin en Greek. In 1773 he continued his education at the University of Leiden, studying Latin and Greek, Dutch language and literature, and, later on, law. In the following years he worked on an edited volume of Spiegel Historiael of Rijmkronijk van Jakob van Maerlant, published in the 13th century. Steenwinkel also contributed to a historical biographical work and published edited works on translation of Greek and Latin texts into Dutch. During the Batavian Revolution he lived in Antwerp and Brussels for a few years. Upon his return to the Netherlands he was active in public policy and worked as a judge, notary and lawyer. He was a member of several scientific societies. Steenwinkel was married to Cornelia van El, with whom he had four children.
