Biography:
Willem Bruyn was a compass maker in Amsterdam, in 1776, when he became poorter (citizen). In 1778 his address was at the Oude Teertuinen, in 1789 on the Buitenkant near the Slijpersmarkt, in 1794 on the Zeedijk and in 1805 at the Oude Teertuinen near the Oudezijds Kapel (near to the Kapelsteeg) no.13. Willem was an alderman of the compass makers guild in 1789 and in 1793. His brother, Jan Joris Bruyn (1755-1827), was also a compass maker in Amsterdam. After Willem Bruyn's death, before 1826, his widow Margaretha Bosman continued the business until 1835 as 'Weduwe W. Bruyn, Instrument- en kompasmaker', at the same address. Thereafter it was continued by Jacob de Jong as 'Jb. De Jong & Bruyn', until about 1866. Several compasses by him have been preserved.
