In the Netherlands, there is a working group devoted to it, which holds regular <a href=\"http:\/\/media.leidenuniv.nl\/legacy\/WerkgroepMatCul-bijeenkomsten.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">meetings<\/a>. U heeft Javascript nodig om het te kunnen zien.<script type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>)<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.academischerfgoed.nl\" target=\"_blank\">Foundation for Academic Heritage<\/a><\/strong> (Stichting Academisch Erfgoed or SAE) is responsible for the interests of the material heritage of the Netherlands&#8217; five oldest universities. Its web site also lists a number of &#8216;crown jewels&#8217;, who together provide some insight into the rich diversity of Dutch academic material culture. The SAE is hosting a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medischerfgoed.nl\" target=\"_blank\">special web site<\/a> devoted to medical heritage.<\/p>\n\n<p>Scienfific heritage, including scientific instruments, is being kept in these museums and institutes:<\/p>\n\n<h2><strong>Netherlands<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n    <li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumboerhaave.nl\/e_intro.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Museum Boerhaave<\/strong><\/a>, Leiden. For several instruments a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumboerhaave.nl\/collectie\/e_hoogtepunten.html\" target=\"_blank\">special selection<\/a> has been made. An on-line surveyof the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumboerhaave.nl\/AAcollection\/english\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">most important instruments and objects<\/a> is under construction.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumboerhaave.nl\/intro.html\">\n<\/a><\/li>\n    <li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teylersmuseum.eu\/index.php?item=1&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Teylers Museum<\/strong> Haarlem<\/a>. For the instruments of the nineteenth century an <a href=\"http:\/\/instrumentenzaal.teylersmuseum.nl\/index.php?lang=english\" target=\"_blank\">advanced website<\/a> has been built showing the instruments on all sides in detail.<\/li>\n    <li>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uu.nl\/EN\/Museum\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"> <strong>Utrecht University Museum<\/strong><\/a> has only a few objects online.<\/li>\n    <li><strong>Technical University Delft<\/strong>: The old museum has been closed in 2008. In 2010 the <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TU Science Center<\/span><\/em> will emerge.<\/li>\n    <li><strong>The Groningen<\/strong><strong> University Museum <\/strong>has a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rug.nl\/museum\/collecties\/wsn\/index\" target=\"_blank\">nice collections<\/a>.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rug.nl\/museum\/index\">\n<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n    <li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetarium-friesland.nl\/engels.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Eisinga-planetarium<\/strong><\/a> in Franeker houses a large number of telescopes and other astronomical objects. Academic heritage of the former <strong>Universiteit of Franeker<\/strong> (1585-1811) is preserved in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museummartena.nl\/?pag_id=13575&amp;site_id=142\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Museum Martena<\/strong><\/a> at Franeker<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2><strong>Rest of the world<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n    <li>For other university museums, see the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/publicus.culture.hu-berlin.de\/collections\" target=\"_blank\">UMAC Worldwide Database of University Museums &amp; Collections<\/a><\/strong><!--  \/* Style Definitions *\/  p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal    {mso-style-parent:\"\";   margin:0cm;     margin-bottom:.0001pt;  mso-pagination:widow-orphan;    font-size:12.0pt;   font-family:\"Times New Roman\";  mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";} @page Section1  {size:595.3pt 841.9pt;  margin:70.85pt 70.85pt 70.85pt 70.85pt;     mso-header-margin:35.4pt;   mso-footer-margin:35.4pt;   mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1   {page:Section1;} -->.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2><strong>Databases for scientific instruments <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n    <li>For research on scientific instruments the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adlerplanetarium.org\/research\/collections\/websters\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Webster-Database<\/strong><\/a> of instrument makers supported by the Adler Planetarium at Chicago is very useful.<\/li>\n    <li>Catalogues of scientific instrument maker firms operational since the 19e-century have been digitalised by the <strong><em>Smithsonian Institution<\/em> <\/strong>in the project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sil.si.edu\/DigitalCollections\/Trade-Literature\/Scientific-instruments\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Instruments for Science, 1800-1914<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n    <li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/vlp.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de\/library\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\">similar project<\/a> of digitalised catalogues of scientific instruments is carried out by the <strong><em>Max Planck Institute for the History of Science<\/em><\/strong> in Berlin.<\/li>\n    <li>A database of historical telescopes:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/historydb.adlerplanetarium.org\/dioptrice\/\">Dioptrice: Refracting Telescopes prior to 1775<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2><strong><strong>Databases for scientific objects in other Dutch museums\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n    <li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maritiemdigitaal.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Maritiem Digitaal<\/strong><\/a> is a database of all the Dutch maritime museums.<\/li>\n    <li>Searching is possible in the collection database of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rijksmuseum.nl\/zoeken\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2><strong>Mailing lists<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n    <li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhs.ox.ac.uk\/rete\/index.htm?text\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rete<\/strong><\/a> is an international mailinglist devoted to teh History of Scientific Instruments, maintained by the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford (G.B.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2><strong>Miscellaneous<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n    <li>At Leiden University a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hum.leidenuniv.nl\/pallas-icd\/onderzoek\/centra-clusters\/lcsucm.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Leiden Centre for the Study of University Collections and Museums<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>has been founded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction The study of the material culture of science is steadily gaining significance.
