Biography:
Florentinus Josephus ridder van Ertborn was born in 1784 in Antwerp. After being the mayor of Antwerp for eleven years, he was appointed as the Governor of the Utrecht province. Van Ertborn was an orangist: a strong supporter of the Orange family and a chamberlain to the King. As he became governor in Utrecht in 1828, he missed out on the Belgian Revolution. Although he stayed an orangist, he was asked to return to his position as a mayor in Antwerp, but he declined out of loyalty to King William I. Thanks to his wealth he was able to support the arts and sciences. He had a large collection of paintings and wrote several articles on art and his own paintings specifically. Van Ertborn was also highly interested in history and collecting historical documents, among other on Jacoba of Bavaria. Additionally he strongly supported the renovation of monuments, notably the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk (Cathedral of Our Lady). After his death van Ertborn's painting were, according to his wish, donated to the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Museum of Fine Arts) in Antwerp. Among those were paintings from Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Rogier van der Weyden, Jan Fouquet and Jan Gossaert. Due to an eye disease he was, at a higher age, almost blind.
Established the foundations for city-based education (stedelijk onderwijs) in Antwerp.
