Correspondence and network of Carolus Clusius online

Huygens ING (KNAW) and Scaliger Institute (Leiden University Libraries) are developing an online presentation of the correspondence and network of the famous sixteenth century naturalist Carolus Clusius. The goal is twofold. Firstly, we offer a web edition of more than 1000 letters (two-thirds of the surviving correspondence), which can be searched and elaborated upon by everyone. Secondly, we make the biographies of almost 700 persons connected with Clusius available. We hope to present an invaluable source for the study of sixteenth-century science and culture, from which historians of science, biologists, cultural historians, linguists and students of palaeography can benefit.

The final presentation of the correspondence and the network of Clusius on the web is scheduled for the end of 2015. But for persons that are curious and would like to collaborate, we offer a beta release of the web edition, which you may access after registering.

This project is carried out by Dr. Esther van Gelder and is made possible by Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands, Scaliger Institute, Leiden University Libraries, Hugo de Vries-fonds, and Stichting Studiefonds Ketel 1.
