Biographies from A History of Science in the Netherlands (Brill)

Introduction

In 1999, the Brill publishing house published an encyclopaedic overview entitled A History of Science in The Netherlands. The work, edited by Klaas van Berkel, Albert van Helden and Lodewijk Palm, consists of four parts:

  1. “The Legacy of Stevin A Chronological Narrative”, by Klaas van Berkel.
  2. Thematic essays on the history of medicine (Frank Huisman), education (Pieter Boekholt), scientific instruments (Peter de Clerq), the relationship between science and belief (Rienk Vermij), the relationship between science and philosophy (Michiel Wielema) and on mathematics (Gerard Alberts, Eisso Atzema and Jan van Maanen).
  3. Sixty-five Biographies of Prominent Dutch Scientists.
  4. An exhaustive bibliography by Lodewijk Palm.

The biographies below can all be found in the third part of this book. The book itself is still available via publisher Brill.
