Biography:
Dutch mathematician and mayor of Amsterdam. Was in contact with Spinoza on the construction of telescopic lenses. Invertor of the single lens microscope, which instrument was used by Huygens, Van Leeuwenhoek and Hartsoeker. He also invented a device used for cleaning the water in the city canals in Amsterdam.
