Fields of interest:
Biography:
Bauke Eisma van der Bildt (1753-1831) made reflecting telescopes. He was the grandson of Jan van der Bildt the elder. In 1752 his mother Rinske van der Bildt (1734-1807) had married Bauke Eisma. In 1773, being a student in theology at Franeker University, Bauke Eisma jr. married Renske van den Velde, who however died shortly afterwards. She was probably the sister of his colleague Idsaard Gerbens van den Velde. Around 1774 Eisma must have left his study on theology, being educated in telescope making by his grandfather. A preserved letter by Jan van der Bildt the elder, dated 1774, states that they observed Saturn together. In those days he added the name Van der Bildt to his fathers name. In the politically turbulent year 1787 Eisma van der Bildt moved to Buiksloot, a village north of Amsterdam, where he settled as an optician, producing ordinary spectacles as well as telescopes. After Van Vliet's death in 1806 Van der Bildt's grandson returned to Franeker to become his successor as amanuensis of Franeker University. He remained in office until his death in 1831.
At the 'Nationale Nijverheid tentoonstelling' (National Industry Exhibition) in Haarlem, he won a silver medal for his telescopes and eyeglasses.
