A portrait of him by Hendrick Goltzius (Boijmans Van Beuningen) is depicted in 'De Wereld binnen handbereik'. He also appears on a painting of Cornelis of Haarlem, 'Allegory of the Arts'.

Hartog van Laun was born in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland). He was an apprentice to scientific instrument maker John Cuthbertson in Amsterdam. Hartog worked as an independent maker and retailer of scientific instruments in Amsterdam from 1784-1815 at various locations (Rapenburgerstraat, Herengracht, Zwanenburgwal, Zandstraat, and Kalverstraat). Van Laun lectured in physics. Later in life he worked with his sons, their instruments were signed: 'H. van Laun en Zoon / Zonen'. After Hartog's death, in 1815, the workshop was continued by his sons Abraham and Jacob. Hartog's grandson by his daughter Diena, was scientific instrument maker Abraham van Emden, who continued the family business until 1860.

Albert van der Camp was a compass maker on the Nieuwland in Amsterdam, in 1720, when became poorter (citizen). In 1725 he was at the same address, in 1742 on the Buitenkant. Albert's father was compass maker Pieter Albertsz. van der Camp, a daughter of Albert married compass maker Josua Daelder. In 1733 and 1744 Albert was compass maker to the Amsterdam Admiralty.
