Biography:
Joan Blaeu studied law at Leiden University from 1616 to 1619 and made a Grand Tour through Europe after his studies. In 1631, he became his father's partner in 'de Vergulde Sonnewijser', a printing and publishing company. In 1635, the printing workshop was moved to the Bloemgracht. The bookshop was located in the Vergulde Sonnewyser, which also became Joan's residence after his father moved to the Bloemgracht. In 1638, after his father's death, Joan was appointed mapmaker for the 'Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie' (VOC). His brother Cornelis joined him as a partner in the firm, but died four years later. Around 1650, Joan created several giant globes, and, in 1662, his son Pieter succeeded him in the printing business. In 1672, Pieter opened a second printing workshop, which was destroyed by fire the same year. Blaeu not only made globes and atlases (including a giant terrestrial globe made around 1650 measuring 2.13 m in diameter housed in the Historical Museum, Moscow), but also printed and published forbidden Catholic books under a pseudonym (Cornelis van Egmond in Ceulen, Kinckius in Ceulen and Calcovius in Ceulen).

In 1691 Loots was recorded as mathematical instrument maker. In 1693 he was admitted to the booksellers guild and in 1695 he started selling charts, Johannes' oldest preserved cross-staff also dates from that year. After Loots' death, his widow Sara Swigters, and her brother Isaac Swigters, continued the firm until 1743 and 1750 respectively. She advertised as 'Weduwe van wijlen Johannes Loots konst- en kaartverkoopster'. After 1750 Hendrik Mooy purchased the remaining cross-staffs and continued that branch of the firm 'In de Jonge Lootsman'.

Plancius was clergyman but also astronomer, cartographer, geographer, mathematician and instrument maker. He came to Amsterdam in 1585 and was teacher in navigation. He made an instrument for finding the longitude on sea (for which he received a patent of the Staten van Holland). He delivered globes and sea maps: it is uncertain whether he made these himself. Plancius 'made' three globes with Pieter van den Keere. Plancius was the author and Van den Keere the publisher. Was associated with, among others: Jodocus Hondius, Hessel Gerrits and Willem Barents.

Biography:
Cartographer and hydraulic engineer. Cruquius was born in 1678, either on Vlieland or in Delft. His father was a mathematician and surveyor, who worked for the VOC chamber in Delft. In 1698, Nicolaas completed his education as a surveyor and started to make topographical maps, his most important work being a large wall map of Delfland in twenty-five parts. In 1716, he matriculated at Leiden University, where he worked with Herman Boerhaave. He was also active in meteorology. On 19 December 1705, he started to make meteorological measurements in Delft. First, he measured only atmospheric pressure, but soon he expanded his measurements to temperature and wind. From 1733 until his death in 1754, he continued these measurements as employee of the 'Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland'. His main task for this organization was to manage the hydrology of the polders. Cruquius used his meteorological measurements to persuade the policy makers. He submitted a plan to the States of Holland to establish a meteorological institute. In this he was supported by three professors from Leiden University: Wittichius, 's Gravesande and Lulofs. Although the plan was rejected, Cruquius still played an important role in Dutch meteorology, by being the first to make a sustained and consistent series of meteorological observations. Another novelty was that Cruquius presented his data in graphs. He was also the first one to use symbols to present weather phenomena, such as wind and rain. He also made scientific instruments, such as a standard foot measure (the 'Rijnlandse voet'), made together with Jacob van Werven. In 1724 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London.
Was the first one to use symbols to present weather phenonema
