Biography:
Duke of Aerschot and Prince of Chimay. One of the highest and most wealthy noblemen of the Southern Netherlands. Married Marie de Brimeu in September 1580, he was ten years her junior. Marie de Brimeu converted him to Protestantism and they moved to the Southern Netherlands. Because of political conflicts with William, Prince of Orange, De Croy returned to Catholicism and to the Habsburg regime after some years, while Marie de Brimeu remained a Calvinist and stayed in the Netherlands. His sister was Anne de Croy, Duchess of Aerschot, she was married to Charles d'Arenberg.
De Croy was a collector of various things: art, antiquities and naturalia. Jacques Plateau sold some of his ornithological curiosities to the Duke, and became a member of his staff from 1604 onwards.
Shared botanical interest with Carolus Clusius, they corresponded. Clusius visited him in The Hague in the spring of 1598 to see his tulips. De Croy and Clusius exchanged pictures as well. The engraving of an Indian Daffodil (Rariorum Plantarum, 1601) is based on an illustration Clusius received from De Croy, for example.

Biography:
Hendrik Ludolph Wichers studied law in his birthcity, under the tutors Dionysius van de Wijnpersse, Dionysius Godefridus van der Keessel and F.A. van der Marck. After obtaining his PhD degree in 1770, he established himself as a lawyer in Groningen. In addition he did research in legal history. In 1777 Wichers published 'Ex hominum communis secundum mentem Hugonis Grotii proposita et explicata', based on the principles of Hugo Grotius and dedicated to stadholder Willem V. In the meantime he held several governmental offices. In 1786 Wichers was elected as 'Eerste gecommitteerde tot regeling, verbetering of herstelling der quotes of aandelen der onderscheidene provinciën in de generaliteit-uitgaven'. In 1795 he and many other Orangists were dismissed from office. It was not until 1802 that Wichers returned to his political career. In the following years he was appointed as a member of the 'Raad van State' and Director-General of indirect taxes, convoys and licenses. In 1820 he returned to Groningen and became curator of the university.

Biography:
Waagen was born in Hamburg, the son of a painter and nephew of the poet Ludwig Tieck. Having passed through the college of Hirschberg, he volunteered for service in the Napoleonic campaign of 1813-1814, and on his return attended the lectures at Breslau University. He devoted himself to the study of art, which he pursued in the great European galleries, first in Germany, then in Holland and Italy.
A pamphlet on the brothers Van Eyck led to his appointment to the directorship of the newly founded Berlin Museum in 1832. The result of a journey to London and Paris was an important publication in three volumes, Kunstwerke und Künstler in England und Paris (Berlin, 1837-1839), which became the basis for his more important The Treasures of Art in Great Britain, translated by Elizabeth Eastlake, (4 vols, London, 1854 and 1857). This remains a key source for the provenance of paintings then in England. Although Waagen has been criticised for his "amateurish and erratic expertise" by modern standards, his work was regarded as highly authoritative for the next half-century.[1]
In 1844 he was appointed professor of art history at the Berlin University, and in 1861 he was called to St Petersburg as adviser in the arranging and naming of the pictures in the imperial collection. On his return he published a book on the Hermitage collection (Munich, 1864). Among his other publications are some essays on Rubens, Mantegna and Signorelli, Kunstwerke und Künstler in Deutschland, and Die vornehmsten Kunstdenkmäler in Wien.
He died on a visit to Copenhagen in 1868. In the light of later research his writings are not of much value as regards trustworthy criticism, though they are useful as catalogues of art treasures in private collections at the time when they were compiled. His opinions were greatly respected in England, where he was invited to give evidence before the royal commission inquiring into the condition and future of the National Gallery, for which he was a leading candidate to become Director.
